Model Answer:

As a proud Bangladeshi, I always like to learn about the history of Bangladesh. So, whenever there is a performance or documentary on Bangladesh, I try to watch them, just like I watched a theatrical performance about a few months ago in Dhaka.

Anyway, the performance took place at Dhaka theatre, one of the most popular theatre groups of Bangladesh, and they performed on a play called “Payer Awaj Pawa Jaye” (meaning “ We can hear the footsteps”). Directed by late theatre personality Abdullah Al Mamun, ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ is one of the masterpieces by a prolific Bangladeshi writer called Syed Shamsul Haq.

The storyline runs like this - after 24 years of Pakistani persecution, in 1971 the Liberation War began in then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The setting of the story is seen to be in a remote village of the country where the life and even daily chores of the ordinary villagers depend on the directives of the 'matbor'— the village chief who happens to be a diehard supporter of Pakistan. He calls the fellow villagers to back the cause of Pakistan as it represents Islam, and resist the Liberation War. But the villagers challenge the chief.  Incidentally, the Pakistan army too subjects the chief to cruel and degrading treatment and forces him to offer his daughter to be used by a Captain.

When the entire village assembles at his home for the rejoinder to his anti-Liberation stand, his raped daughter lets slip all his secrets and commits suicide. By the way, some of the most famous theatre artists of Bangladesh, like Ferdousi Majumdar, Keramat Maola, Paresh Acharya, Tropa Majumdar, Khurshid Alam, Maruf Kabir, Tofa Hossain and Atikur Rahman performed in this play.

Anyway, I enjoyed the live performance because it was very lively with all the characters there blending perfectly with the plot/theme of the play. Besides, with the perfect set design and makeup, the performance seemed to be so original that I felt like I was actually present there in the timeline of the events of the play.
