I am sure that majority of the population across the world love reading books. In fact, I also love to read books and there are no specific genres are available. Book reading is a favourite pastime for me. And I have a large collection of various types of books. Thank you for the smart question.

There are a wide number of pastime activities are available around us. But not all of them are suitable for each of us and sometimes people are reluctant to participate in them for various reasons. Investing physical labour or efforts is one of the prime cause for reluctance. But reading books is a simple pastime and is loved by all for the nature. To read books you will not need to invest a huge amount of money or labour. Just take a book and start reading it. So simple! I also have reluctance to participate in pastime activities that require physical movement. Book reading helps me in this case and has saved my time.

I enjoy book reading for various reasons. The most important thing is that it helps to know the world. A book is filled with knowledge. The knowledge will help you to know the things and happenings around you. Besides, it also widens outlook. The more you will read, the more you will be wiser. Further, reading books has numerous benefits. It helps to construct your mental faculty stronger than before. The knowledge you will get from a book is precious. Some of the books provide pleasure while some other will make you cry. You will start thinking yourself as one the characters of the books. Moreover, reading books help to remain calm and quiet. The benefits of book reading are undoubtedly helpful for humans. It is a kind of therapy to mind. When the mind is restless, reading books help to concentrate the mind on specific issues and matters. Based on the beneficial grounds, I love reading books and enjoy it greatly.

I have been reading the book since an early age. In fact, many of my friends, classmates and relatives had termed me as book worm for my extensive book reading. I am introvert since my childhood. It becomes difficult for me to socialise with people who are not of my league. And this is really tough to get people with similar mentality and nature. The number of such people is limited. So, I have made book reading as my hobby and pastime activity. As a result, I have read so many books until today. With the comparison of my age, I am too much matured and it happened only after reading the books. When the kids of my age used to play in the playground, I used to read comic books. Consequently, I got familiar with a notable number of comic characters which are now found in cinemas.

I prefer book reading as my favourite pastime for so many reasons. First of all, books are the best friend of people. You might have a quarrel or suffer mental complexities with your near and dear ones or friends. But there would be no such issues with a book. The book will remain your constant companion as long as you want. On the other sides, the books are enriched with information and knowledge that may help you lead a happy and peaceful life. Besides, I love to read books as they entertain me. I visualise the events I find on book pages. The writing styles help me imagine the events happening before my eyes. Sometimes, I start thinking myself as a character of the story. The feelings are incredible. Therefore, book reading is my favourite pastime.

When you waited for a bus or a train

IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card 314 with Model Answer:

Describe a situation when you waited for a bus or a train.

You should say:
  • when it was
  • where you waited
  • how long you waited
and explain how you felt about it.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
I am a student of the University of Allahabad in India and graduating on Journalism. Recently, I had to wait for a bus to reach my university and that was a horrible experience for me. I will remember the event for long days. Thank you for the question and I will describe the event now.

It was last Monday when I had to attend a class in the university in the afternoon. In fact, it was a weird timing for me. It is difficult for me to get out in the afternoon. Besides, the sun is bright at that time which is another issue for me. I like to stay at home at this time of the day but had to set out my journey to university without finding no other ways as the class was very important. I had also to wait for the bus to arrive at the stoppage. I waited for over one hour at the bus stoppage and finally reached at the university.

The bus station is adjacent to my residence. Actually, the bus stoppage was a five-minute walk from my home. But the conditions of the bus station were unsatisfactory. The lack of seating arrangement and sheds on top were the most troublesome issue about the bus station. So, I had to wait under the bright sun. Besides, it is also difficult for a young woman like me to wait in an open space. A wide number of vehicular movement made it intolerable to wait beside a busy road. But there were no other ways. There was a crowd of people and everyone was waiting for the bus. In fact, the number of buses was reduced on that day for a strike of the bus owners’ association on some demands. So, they did not allow the buses to ply on the roads. The sufferings of the ordinary people were really unbearable.

I waited for over one hour for the bus ride. Usually, there are lots of buses available in the city but when there are such strikes, the number of buses and other public transports get reduced. At that moment, the ordinary people have to suffer and struggle a lot to reach their destinations. When I went at the bust stoppage, there were only a few people waiting for the bus to arrive. But with the passing of time, there was a moderate crowd of people. But unfortunately, the people turned impatient. And when a bus arrived, everyone rushed to ride and I missed the chance that time. It was impossible for me to ride the bus by pushing the crowd. So, I waited. The next bus arrived about 45 minutes later. It was unmanageable for me to get on the bus that time too. But I asked everyone to follow the queue so that everyone could get a seat on the bus.

I was fed up with the experience. Everyone wanted to get on the bus by pushing others away. Besides, some of the waiting passengers started quarrelling over the issue. So, the situations were hot. As a female, it was not possible for me to join with the quarrel and I waited calmly but got irritated with the surrounding events. Finally, when I board the bus, I experienced another situation. There were no empty seats and even the seats reserved for females were filled up. So, I had to make a standing journey. I will not forget the event too soon.

Model Answer:
Umpiring in cricket is one of the most challenging profession I have ever known. In fact, this is one of the toughest profession I have ever seen in my life. Thank you for such a smart question and here are the answers.

Umpires are those people who are set to play the role of referee in sports, particularly in cricket. The man who stands behind the wicket with a distance wearing hat is known as the umpire of the game. He is responsible to run the game smoothly and provide important decisions like responding to the appeal of out, declaring the end of a bowling over, declaring the extra runs and more other issues. This is a challenging profession indeed as the umpire needs to remain aware of everything during the play. But this is a prestigious profession as well. The umpires are respected everywhere and have access to places where the ordinary people cannot even think of.

The most important challenge is focusing. The umpires need to be focused on some specific issues during the game. Firstly, they need to focus on the bowling of the bowlers. If they are delivering the balls in the right and prescribed manner. If there are any mismatch with the bowling pattern and the prescribed process, the umpire declares accordingly. Besides, the umpire is also responsible for looking after the stepping of the bowlers. On the other sides, the umpire takes a sharp look at the batsmen. Sometimes they need to have a focused look on the stepping of the batsmen as well. Declaring an out is another challenging task for them. If there is any mistake in the declaration of an ‘out’, it may ruin the career of a batsman. Besides, if there is a wrong decision, the umpire is brought under scanner if he is biased by any means of not.

To be frank, I am not eligible for the profession of a professional umpire. This is a tough job. I lack the skills and expertise required for the decision making. Moreover, I do not have so much focusing ability. The umpires have to stand on their legs till the cricket match continues. So, it is another disability of mine that I am unable to stand for long hours and without any external support. The umpires have to decide carefully about the decisions of out and not out. Sometimes, a wrong decision may bring negative criticism which is unbearable to me. Besides, I do not have the sharp eyesight. The umpires often provide the decision of LBW and they do not need to see the entire bowling and foot placement on screen repeatedly. They see it once and give a decision which is accurate in most of the cases. But I am unable to do any of those. So, this is not the profession for me.

Umpiring is a challenging profession in many aspects. When an umpire is on the playground, he needs to be careful about some certain matters. He needs to know all the available rules of cricket. He needs to take an instant decision. Besides, if he makes any mistake, it is he who is to be responsible for. Rewards and resources are limited but they need to provide the best performance. When they fail to take any decision, they need to consult with the third umpire for accuracy or decide any unresolved or pending decision. In a word, they are to take unbearable physical and mental pressure when they are on the ground. Therefore, I think this is a challenging profession indeed.

Model Answer:
Telling lie is never appreciated and to prevent people from lying to each other, a good number of stories are found across the world. The story of a tiger and a cowhand is a popular one around the other nations and this is the same here in Ghana. In fact, this is a great story that inspires people from telling lies.

The story is about a young cowhand who used to tell lies to other people, particularly the other cowhands in his surroundings. He used to shout about tigers and the remaining cowhands rushed to help him. They got prepared with tools and arms available to prevent the tiger. But there was nothing such found finally. When they came to save the young cowhand and his cattle, the young one used to laugh at them. He got a satisfaction that he has fooled them. The similar thing happened for a couple of days and one day the tiger came. He shouted for help but none arrived in his support. They thought the young one might want to befool them again.

I heard the story to my grandma. In fact, when I was a kid, my grandma used to tell such stories at night. Sitting in a round circle at the house, I heard the story. Some of my cousins also had the same experience. They also used to listen to the story from the same storyteller – my grandma. Later, when I was at school, I found the story in my textbook. It was easier for me to cope with the story as I heard it before. Actually, many of the students were unable to go with the story as they did not have the chance to know it beforehand. I was lucky in this sense that my grandma had told many other stories like this and all of them were entertaining and educative as well.

This is a short story and teaches to never tell a lie. In fact, telling a lie may bring a temporary satisfaction or gain in life but in the long run, it destroys the life. When someone tells lie more and more, s/ he cannot tell the truth even if they want. It turns into a habit that is tougher to leave. Moreover, by telling lies, you are hurting the emotional state of someone. When you will lie to them, and if they can comprehend the issue, they will never trust you again. The liars, usually, lose trust from people. Nobody loves them or trust them. Even they are ignored in their families. The detrimental impacts of telling lies are huge than anyone can imagine. The story is about truth. If the cowhand did not tell the lie and befool the other cowhands, he could have managed support in the time of necessity.

This is a much popular story in my country. To make any example, majority people cite the story and tries to convince others in avoiding lies. Besides, most of the people here are simple and lead ordinary lives. But there are some people who are really troublesome and lies always. This is also a lesson for them to give up the habit of telling lie. The story is particularly popular among the kids as they hear it frequently. When I was a kid, the story was interesting to me as it is now. This is the story that is available in many other countries with minor modifications in the consequences of the cowhand. But it teaches a great lesson for life. So, it is popular in my country.

Of course, I like watermelon. In fact, this is one of my preferred fruits during summer. It comes with numerous health benefits. My parents also inspire me on having watermelon as much as I can during the summer days. I prefer to have the fruit in the form of juice than the slice. But this is a bit complex process. To prepare watermelon juice, you need to cut the fruit into pieces and then blend them. Add some sugar if you prefer to bring more taste. But I feel trouble while sorting out the seeds from the fruit. But after completing everything when I drink the juice, I feel a heavenly pleasure. Sometimes, I take the juice with me at my college and drink them when I need. In fact, I love the juice more than any other thing and my mum helps me preparing it.

Watermelon is a popular fruit in my country for many reasons. In summer, the temperature level rises more than expected. So, people are in need to hydrate their bodies. Drinking water is the only solution but it is not preferable to many of them. So, when they are seeking the alternative, watermelon comes in the first position of their search list.
