Model Answer:
Usually, the new year is celebrated amid great festivity in Australia. A good number of people get out of their home to witness the departure of a year. They also welcome the next year and hope for the best. I can remember the new year of 2013 when I was an undergraduate at University of New South Wales in Sydney. Thank you for the question and I will describe the event now.

It was the last celebration of a new year as a student because my last semester was going on. So, we all planned for a grand celebration on the last day of the year. After the plan, we arranged for a good number of activities and accomplished them perfectly. We gathered before 11 pm at the premise of Sydney Opera House and everyone enjoyed the event that we had been planning for past few days. This was a great fun to me and other friends of mine present there.

We had several plans but unluckily we could not implement all of them due to lack of preparation. So, we just did the most desired ones. In fact, none of us was familiar with fireworks. So, it was on the top of the list. On the day time, one of my friends was assigned to get the fireworks. And we were grateful to him for his cordial contribution. He brought fireworks more than our imagination. Each of us, on that night, set fire on the fireworks and they made the sky vibrant. Besides, there were arrangements for refreshment. We took foods and soft drinks. For some security measures and considering some other issues, we did not allow any types of alcoholic drink for us. It was a nice party and everyone of us enjoyed greatly. The fireworks were noteworthy and it attracted a remarkable number of people to enjoy the show.

Almost all of my intimate friends and associates were present at the event. I can remember Julia, Peter, Johnson, Thomas and Andrea among others. In fact, they were my best friends and still, they are. The idea to celebrate was my brainchild and everyone agreed. But some of the mates could not accept the invitation because they had some other engagement on that night. So, accordingly, we all made plans to celebrate the day. It was a bit difficult to arrange for everything needed for the day. When I had sent Peter for the fireworks, he failed several times to get them. The fireworks were unavailable and he had to move in different places to arrange them. When he returned, he surprised us. Julia was assigned to arranges for the foods and she brought some homemade foods for us. We were happy with the food items. Overall, it was a nice celebration.

We all shouted with the fireworks. I set fire on a piece right before the clock reached 12.00am. it was the beginning of a new year, new hope and new days. So, every one of us was too much excited about the entire event. Some of the friends started dancing together when the clock passed the midnight. I also enjoyed the party that night. They all praised me highly for taking such a step to celebrate the day. Finally, we returned home after around one and a half hours passing on various streets of Sydney. The day is still vivid on my mind.

Model Answer:
Usually, I do not take foods out of the home. But sometimes I have to take the foods when I am travelling abroad. And the experiences are sweet and sour. Thank you for the question. Recently I went to Mexico for attending an international conference and I will describe the experience with foods in Mexico now.

I am a student of HELP University in Kuala Lumpur. I have been born and brought up here. So, everything is familiar to me. Since my parents take a great care to me, I never had to take my foods out of the home. But this time, it was different. I had to join at the conference as a representative of my university and also had to taste various types of foreign foods. The experience was interesting. I went Mexico in the last quarter of 2016. And it was the first journey out of my country as well.

I had to stay at a hotel in Mexico and I took my foods from the restaurant of that hotel. Sometimes, I went out with the other participants and tasted the delicious foods. But there were some basic differences among the foods of Mexico and Malaysia. In fact, I am habituated with foods prepared with less spice and oil. But the foods that I tasted in Mexico were a bit opposite of my taste. But I took them and tried to adjust with the environment. The restaurant, where I took the foods, also sold some other traditional Mexican foods. But I liked the ones similar to my traditions. I am familiar with rice and took mostly the foods prepared with rice. On the other side, I am a vegetarian and so, it was a bit difficult for me to avoid the non-veg foods there. Because most of the food items had some sort of meats with them.

Taking foods out of home is always troublesome for me. And when it was in a foreign land, the troubles increased more for me. In fact, I was used to with the local foods of Malaysia. So, I had some issues with the Mexican foods. Besides, I am more conscious of the cooking and cleaning process of the foods. My mother cooks the foods after cleaning them in the right manner. But the restaurants' cooks are most of the cases unable to clean the food ingredients properly before cooking them. They are not that much neat and clean. I gained the experiences from some of the local restaurants here in Malaysia. So, I developed the idea and it was changed after I had a look at the kitchen of the restaurant where I took my foods during my stay. So, I enjoyed the meals most of the time.

This is a bit confusing issue for me to answer. Some of the foods were delicious while I could not eat some other foods for their bizarre tastes. So, I rather follow a neutral stance on this issue. Foods prepared with vegetables were extremely delicious to me. But I tried to take some non-veg foods as well only to check their tastes. But I could not consume them properly and had to give up finally as the tastes appeared strange to me. However, I enjoyed the foods like Mexican Rice, Mexican Red Rice, Mexican Chocolate Cake, Simple Mexican Rice etc. than any other foods. So, the experience was mixed for me.

Describe something you do to help others

IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card 308 with Model Answer:

Describe something you do to help others.

You should say:
  • what you do
  • how long have you been doing it
  • how you started doing it
and explain why you think this is helpful for others.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
I actually provide technological support to people and some people have opined that it has greatly helped them. To make it clear, I help other people with their needs related to computer and technology. Actually, I am not quite enthusiast doing it and not sure how much it helps others, but for this cue card topic, I would like to talk about it.

I live in a joint family in India. And thus the number of family members is more than the other ordinary families. So, most of them are in need of various types of supports and I try to help them when they fall in trouble with technological issues. Besides, I also help them when they cannot use their computers and other electronic devices. Often, some of the senior family members come with issues like their mobile phones are not working or they cannot make calls etc. Besides, I am popular in my locality as a great tech-savvy and repair man(!!!) and the people who are in need of such supports ask me to help them. Without any charge, I help them as much as I can.

I had some training on technological aspects like repairing computers, television and other electronic devices. I took the training in 2013 and learnt to repair those. It began with the repair of the television set of my home. My mother was having trouble to watch the television and it had a poor signal receiving. She was unable to see shows clearly. So, I changed a part of the television set and everything was okay. She spread the issue to everyone and I got a reputation for solving the electronic devices. Sometimes, they came to me about solving some technological troubles. The issues were working with internet and computer. Since a majority of the people of my locality are not too much educated, they fall in trouble easily with the issues. So, I go for their help.

The support began within my family. It was my mother who played the biggest role in spreading his son's reputation as a mechanic for electronic devices, as I told earlier. Then my reputation soared higher in the family and in the locality. Everyone gathered with their troubles. But it was not possible for me to repair everything they asked me to do. Sometimes I failed and told them that the thing was completely dead. At a point, I decided to make it a commercial activity for me. But my mother advised me not to be a commercial person in this case. She also advised me to complete my education at first and keep the repairing activities as my hobby. After her suggestions, I worked so and still repairing electronic devices as my hobby.

Certainly, this is helpful to others. In fact, if I were not there, they would have to move to a distant city to repair their devices. This locality is a remote one in India and devoid of modern amenities. The number of internet user is few. It is hopeful that the government has adopted various measures to improve the conditions of the locality. But still, the people are backdated. Most of the families only have a television set for recreational purposes. Some of the wealthy people have personal computers and they take great care of the devices (always keep the computers under cover and use once or twice in a month). So, they are greatly benefitted with my service and need to pay for the part prices only that I bring from the distant town riding my bicycle. I am happy to be in their help.

Often we are to fall victim of natural calamities. It may happen for a good number of reasons. I fear earthquake most for many reasons. I have seen the devastating impacts of the earthquake from an early age and thus I am afraid of it. Besides, there are some other natural disasters are also available on my land but this is one of the most terrible ones to me.

Earthquake is a natural disaster that may occur at any time of the day or the year. In Indonesia, there are less number of natural disasters but I think this one is more frequent than any other disasters. When it appears with a massive strike, it damages a good number of properties and people. There are no exact reasons have been found so far but it is assumed that it happens for the release of energy from the ground level of the earth. Besides, it is also caused by the slippage of the geological faults.

Playing games on a cell phone is really an interesting matter. It also helps to pass leisure hours. So, often I play games on my cell phone. Thank you for the question. I will describe the game now.

This is a 3D game named ‘Sniper Assassin’. I came to know about the game when I was browsing the App Store to get some suitable apps for my iPhone 6S. I was seeking an action game and suddenly the recommendation for the game appeared. This is an action game and about to kill criminals in different environments. By eliminating the criminals, the player achieves points. This is a realistic game and provides much pleasure to me. In fact, I am in love with this game for many reasons. The game has an attractive graphic interface and the other features are also adorable. The initial levels are easy to play but they start becoming hard once you move for the next levels.
